"Here's to the sunny slopes of long ago," was the favorite toast of John A. Lomax, co-founder of the Texas Folklore Society, which lends its name to this volume which opens with J. Frank Dobie's sketch of Lomax. It is followed by Lomax's own "Cowboy Lingo," found among Dobie's papers, and by two other articles on the cowboy by men whose names sound out in the history of southwestern writing. The theme of the cowboy and the West is further pursued in "The Cowboy Code" by Paul Patterson, "The Cowboy Enters the Movies" by Mody Boatright, "Billy the Kid, Hired Gun or Hero" by John O. West, and "Laureates of the Western Range" by Everett A. Gillis. Next comes William D. Wittliff's collection of passages on folklore from Dobie's writings. The second half of the volume includes the history of two folktales, a strange religious sect, tales of East Texas fox hunts, an old-time charcoal burner, poke sallet, and folksongs, among others. Includes a special portfolio of J. Frank Dobie photographs.

Before Owen Wister's publication of The Virginian in 1902, the image of the cowboy was essentially that of the dime novel. This title details the evidence that Everett Johnson a cowboy from Virginia who had been a friend of Wister's in Wyoming in the 1880s, was the initial and prime inspiration for Wister's cowboy.

Cowboy Classics looks at the surprisingly close connection between Western film and Greek and Roman epic, each of which focuses on a mythic-historical period from the past where our societal notions of what constitutes heroism, masculinity, and honor were first forged.

Set in Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona, the stories are a loosely tied string of old timer's yarns with a continuing cast of engaging characters, whom Kiskaddon avoids reducing to cowboy stereotypes. They include, as Siems describes them, ""Kiskaddon himself as the character Shorty. As a common waddy with a small man's feistiness and a young man's mischief, Shorty encounters the wicked world with a succession of companions: Bill, high-headed and a bit of an outlaw; Rildy Briggs, untamable and unstoppable young cowgirl; and Ike, an old-fashioned dandy and 'a very fortunate person.' This comprehensive study of the Western covers its history from the early silent era to recent spins on the genre in films such as No Country for Old Men, There Will Be Blood, True Grit, and Cowboys & Aliens. While providing fresh perspectives on landmarks such as Stagecoach, Red River, The Searchers, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, and The Wild Bunch, the authors also pay tribute to many under-appreciated Westerns. Ride, Boldly Ride explores major phases of the Western's development, including silent era oaters, A-production classics of the 1930's and early 1940's, and the more psychologically complex portrayals of the Westerner that emerged after World War II. The authors also examine various forms of genre-revival and genre-revisionism that have recurred over the past half-century, culminating especially in the masterworks of Clint Eastwood. They consider themes such as the inner life of the Western hero, the importance of the natural landscape, the roles played by women, the tension between myth and history, the depiction of the Native American, and the juxtaposing of comedy and tragedy. Written in clear, engaging prose, this is the only survey that encompasses the entire history of this long-lived and much-loved genre.
